Daemon began learning to tattoo in 1981, after having what he calls "an interesting and profound experience" getting his first tattoo out west while travelling away from home. Like most of us, that's all it took to get the bug. Daemon’s shop, Urban Primitive, came to life a year after he completed a four-year degree at the Ontario College of Art (now OCAD), where he chose to spend his final year studying the art of tattooing, and he hasn't stopped studying and learning ever since.
We’ll let @urbanprimitivetattoo tell you about his work in his own words: “I’ve always focused on dotwork, whether by machine or unplugged. I just love the whole sacredness of it. It's a ritual. It's a ceremony. Originally, Indigenous cultures who practiced tattooing considered the finished visible product along with the experience of getting it to be the totality of the experience. It was meant to be life-changing. I like tattoos with deep, heartfelt meaning. A tattoo should have a story, even if it’s chosen not to be told.”
When not tattooing, Daemon still spends time with a paintbrush in hand, and he loves to carve things when he has time (be sure to “joy-scroll” his Instagram page to see some of his incredible carvings). He’s also currently creating a small space for clients to stay overnight while getting their Soulprint at his tiny tattoo temple in the forests just below Algonquin Park. His hope is that this creative living space will have a positive and profound effect on the client’s overall Soulprint experience while they’re at Urban Primitive.
