Black and Grey Tattoo Ink - Black and Grey Tattoo Ink

Start with a black that holds its line, then build every tone down from it, warm or cool, transparent or opaque, stepped exactly where you want the gradient to land. That is the whole ask of black and grey tattoo ink, and this shelf answers both halves of it, from the seven professional brands Eikon carries in Canada.

What Makes an Ink Right for Black and Grey?

Black and grey is a style, not a use case, and that distinction saves money. A style is what the finished tattoo looks like; a use case is the job the ink does inside it: lining, shading, packing, or wash work. One black and grey piece runs through all four.

So there is no such thing as a dedicated black and grey tattoo ink. What there is: ordinary professional blacks and wash systems, chosen for the jobs this style leans on hardest, crisp linework that stays crisp, and tones that transition without banding.

That is why this shelf looks the way it does. It is not a product line. It is the blacks, wash systems, whites and mixers black and grey artists pull from across all seven brands Eikon carries, Eternal, Solid, Fusion, Panthera, Empire, Dermaglo and Kwadron.

Black and Grey vs True Grey, What's the Difference?

Artists use "grey" for two different things, and buying the wrong one is a common false start.

True greys are pre-mixed grey colours, pigmented, opaque, poured and used. They sit in the palette next to your other colours and hold their tone on the skin.

Greywashes are transparent or semi-transparent: less pigment per pass, built to layer. You lay one over another to reach a tone, rather than pouring that tone directly.

Most black and grey work runs on washes, because tonal transitions are the whole point of the style and a wash lets you build them in passes. Opaque greys earn their place where you want a tone to sit flat and stay put. Plenty of artists keep both on the workstation.

Which Black Should You Start With?

The black is the decision that shows. Line work is unforgiving: it reveals every wobble, every bleed, every soft spot. Artists tend to be more opinionated about their lining black than about anything else on the bench.

Two of the three groups on this shelf are specialists, formulated for one job and better at it than a generalist:

Dedicated liners, built for a crisp, controlled line with minimal bleed. Eternal Lining Black, Eternal Pitch Black Classic Lining, Solid Lining Black and Panthera Liner Black each sit here. Panthera attributes Liner Black's easy push to a particular molecular density; Solid's position on Lining Black is that it doesn't bleed out your lines.

Packers and blackout blacks, heavy pigment loads, for solid fills. Solid Heavy Black is roughly three times as concentrated as its Lining Black. Panthera Tribal Black XXX is the fill and blackout primary, and doubles as a heavy liner.

Working through which liner to commit to? That comparison lives on best black tattoo ink for lining.

Or One Black That Does Several Jobs?

The third group trades specialisation for versatility. Ink formulated for one use case can underperform in another, a wash lacks the pigment to pack solid, a liner lacks the transparency for graduated tonal work, but the all-around blacks are built to sit in the middle and cover more of the range from one bottle.

Fusion Basic Black is the thinner black Fusion points to for lining. Dermaglo Black Redi-Mix and Empire Vine Black both line; Empire characterises Vine Black as a traditional carbon black with a low load, good for fast lines and whip shading. Kwadron markets Inx Enriched Black for lining and shading both, and it is the only Kwadron ink Eikon stocks.

Which way you go is a real preference split, not a skill gap. Artists building a bench around optimised performance per job buy the specialists; artists who would rather master one black and know exactly how it behaves buy the all-arounds. For the full black range beyond this style, see black tattoo ink.

The Wash Systems: Eight Ways to Build a Tonal Range

A wash deposits less pigment per pass than a solid colour. A wash system is a coordinated set, usually three to five bottles graduated light to dark, sharing a base, so you can work across a range without mixing in the cap every time.

Eikon stocks eight of them, from five brands:

Where Do You Go From Here?

Which page you want next depends on the part of the range you are filling:

  • The graduated shelf, all brands, grey wash tattoo ink is the whole wash story: pre-mixed versus the drop method, how a wash heals, and a quick-pick by job.

  • Empire's systems, Empire graywash for transparent shadows, Empire whitewash for the semi-opaque pair. Blackwash has no shelf of its own yet; the stages are in the full Empire range.

  • The Japanese-lineage ramps, Solid's Horitomo Sumi and Panthera's Sumy ramp, step by step, on sumi tattoo ink.

  • Opaque greys rather than washes, grey tattoo ink.

If you mix your own rather than pouring a ramp, Empire's mixing mediums are on this shelf too: Glaze, Glycerin, Propylene-Glycol, and Witch Hazel, alongside Titanium White.

Buying Black and Grey Tattoo Ink in Canada

Eikon carries Health-Canada-notified brands. Health Canada sets and enforces the impurity limits; the manufacturer meets them. That is the floor, and it is the same floor for every bottle on this shelf.

Every bottle ships individually sealed. Heat packs are free from November through March, so a winter order does not arrive frozen. Everything ships coast to coast from Kingston, Ontario.

Ink is sold to vetted professional artists through a Pro Account. Check each product page for the sizes a line is manufactured in.
