Grey Colours or Grey Wash: Which Are You Buying?

Two different products answer to "grey tattoo ink," and they do different jobs on skin. The greys on this page are fixed colours, each a tone with its own character, warm, cool, neutral or tinted, that you pick the way you pick any other colour. A wash is a different tool: a semi-transparent grey that deposits less pigment per pass, built to layer value gradually across a graduated ramp.

This palette gives you distinct tones to place; a wash ramp gives you transitions to build. That's why the two live on different pages.

If you shade portraits and realism from a graduated ramp, you want the grey wash systems; if you pick greys the way you pick any other colour, you're in the right place. You'll also spot Panthera's Dark Sumy in this collection, a blending black that belongs to the wash side of the workflow.

Neutral, Warm, and Cool Greys

Most grey palettes start neutral and branch warm or cool, temperature is what keeps a grey sitting right beside the rest of the tattoo's colours. Eternal covers all three directions as singles.

Eternal Gray is the anchor: what Eternal calls a simple mid-tone, neutral grey with some warmth, the one to start from when the grey shouldn't lean anywhere.

The M Series greys, Eternal's M Series is Mike DeVries and Mario Rosenau, run as two three-step families: Warm Light, Medium and Dark Gray with a warm violet tint, and Cool Light, Medium and Dark Gray with a cool blue tint. Eternal builds each trio opaque and steps it light to dark, so you can hold one temperature across a whole passage of smooth shading. Reach warm when the greys sit against skin tones and earth colours, cool when the piece runs colder.

Every step sells individually here, so replenishing means topping up the one value you burn through fastest, not re-buying a range you already own.

Opaque Greys That Read Solid

When a grey has to cover solid fields, backgrounds, blocks of tone that can't heal patchy, you want an opaque grey rather than a transparent one. Opaque greys are built to read as one flat, solid tone once healed, where the semi-transparent washes are built to layer.

Fusion's Opaque Grey line runs five steps, Extra Light (almost white) to Extra Dark (almost black), with Medium as the true grey in the middle. Fusion also boxes the same five as the Opaque Grey Set, the one set in this collection, and the fastest way to put the full opaque range on your station.

Solid Cool Grey rounds out the solid-reading picks: Solid pitches it for smoke, clouds, or as a medium black-and-grey tone, and says it heals smooth with a silver look.

One product sits between the categories: Empire's Whitewash goes in like a wash and heals like an opaque grey; it lives with the wash systems, not here.

Signature and Tinted Greys

Character greys carry a deliberate cast, realistic tones a plain neutral can't hit. Each product page names its tone.

  • Clay Gray (Eternal, Muted Earth Tones): an earthy grey with a yellowish tint, for working beside brighter colours.

  • Bay Gray (Eternal, Seasonal Spectrum): a dull, medium greenish-blue Eternal compares to deep, murky water.

  • Bomber Gray (Eternal, Vintage Ink): a super-desaturated grey in the yellow-green family.

  • Bomber Grey (Fusion): a deep, solid grey you can darken or lighten.

  • Zane Grey (Eternal, Myke Chambers series): a dark grey with a touch of warmth that heals darker.

  • French Grey (Solid): a warm grey for lighter skin tones or mixing into other colours.

  • Ghost Face Grey (Solid, Chris Garver series): a blue grey pitched for "cold" and "dead" imagery.

  • Blue Grey and Dark Grey (Dermaglo): the UK heritage brand's two standard-palette greys, here the names say it plainly.

Four more greys hide behind non-grey names: Bondo (Eternal, Motor City), a light grey for lightening other colours; Exhaust (Motor City), the cooler counterpart to Smoke; and Cold Steel twice over, Eternal's very dark with some warmth, Fusion's a deep slate with a hint of blue.

How Greys Heal and Hold

A grey that looks right at the stencil stage still has to survive healing and years in skin. Two properties do most of the work: pigment density and transparency. These greys carry a fixed pigment load, and solid-colour work in this class typically holds its tone for years between touch-ups, thin, heavily diluted value work naturally clears sooner, which is an expectation to set with the client, not a flaw in the ink.

Grey also ages more gracefully than most colour families. Black-based pigment drifts toward blue-grey over many years, and a grey palette already lives there, so the shift reads as character rather than colour loss. No ink holds forever, though: plan the piece so its greys keep reading as the skin changes.

The healed read is where these greys earn their keep: Fusion builds its Opaque Greys to read as one flat tone once healed, Solid says Cool Grey heals smooth with a silver look, and Eternal steps its M Series trios opaque so one temperature holds across a whole passage. Check each product page, the healed-result notes there are the most honest preview you'll get.
