How Long Do Biodegradable Tattoo Gloves Take to Break Down?

For the Eikon ECO STANDARD, the number is 81% over 490 days. That comes off our own box, and the box publishes the conditions with it: tested per ASTM D5511, under controlled anaerobic industrial digestor conditions. Untreated nitrile is reported at roughly 0.4% over the same period.

A breakdown number is only a measurement if three things travel with it: the percentage, the elapsed days, and the environment it was run in. Ours are 81%, 490 days, and a sealed industrial digestor.

The box also says results may vary in landfills and other natural environmental conditions. That is our own printing, not a caveat we are adding here.

What the Test Measures — and What It Doesn't

ASTM D5511 is a test method, not a certification. Nobody passes it. It runs a material in a sealed tank without oxygen, kept warm and fed, and reports a percentage at a number of days.

Those conditions are optimal, not typical. A landfill is drier and far less predictable, so treat the figure as a lab result rather than a prediction about your own waste.

What the number does establish is that the material is edible to microbes in the first place. Untreated nitrile is close to inert to them, and closing that gap is the entire reason the additive exists.

And it says nothing about your hands. Breakdown is a separate claim from fit, from strength, from barrier — each with its own test.

Do They Feel Like Standard Black Nitrile Gloves?

This is the question the category has earned. Artists split on eco gloves, and the split came from products that underperformed.

Here is what we can show you. It feels the same as the classic Eikon STANDARD. It is a light-gauge glove — textured fingertips for grip, a beaded cuff to resist roll-down, latex-free and powder-free, supplied in a box of one hundred. It is that glove, compounded with an additive whose only job begins once you have peeled it off and dropped it.

Grip, stretch and tear resistance are the nitrile's doing. The additive is an end-of-life ingredient and it touches none of that.

Two of the three standards on the box cover the part you feel, and they are the ones to read first. ASTM D6319 is the examination-glove specification: whether it fits and whether it holds. ASTM F1671 is the viral-penetration test — whether a blood-borne pathogen can cross the material while you work. For a tattoo artist that second one is the most consequential of the three, and the breakdown figure says nothing about either.

Biodegradable Is Not Compostable

The two words get swapped for each other constantly, and they do not mean the same thing.

This glove carries a biodegradation claim and no compost certification. Calling it a compostable glove gets it exactly wrong — not as a technicality, but because one word names a rate measured under stated conditions and the other names a certified specification a material either meets or does not, and this glove was only ever measured on the first.

Where a Used Glove Actually Goes

Contamination decides which waste stream a used glove enters. What it is made of does not.

A glove that took blood or body fluid goes into a sealed leak-proof bag, and past a certain level of contamination into the biomedical stream. A glove that did not is sealed garbage. Compost is not on the table either way. Composting is not a pathogen treatment, and a used glove was never a candidate for that stream in the first place.

Waste rules are provincial. Your local authority is the only one who can tell you what applies where you are.
