What Is Eikon Essentials ECO?

It is Eikon's own line of reduced-plastic studio consumables: RAZORS, BAGS, SLEEVES and the ECO STANDARD gloves.

Moving them away from plastic was a no-brainer, which is why we opted to only produce BAGS & SLEEVES in this material instead of offering them in both plastic and eco.

Where a straight replacement made sense we made one. Where it did not, we added an option instead and left the original alone — which is exactly what happened with the gloves.

It is also our own line rather than an eco brand we resell. We're new to ECO and we're still learning, but our goal is to reduce our reliance on single-use plastics where we can.

Razors, Bags, Sleeves and Gloves — What Each One Replaces

RAZORS replace a conventional disposable prep razor. The change is the housing: plant fibre instead of a plastic body, so the razor comes apart at the end of a session — the blade head to sharps, always, and the housing, blade removed, to whatever your local programme takes.

BAGS replace our own conventional machine and wash-bottle bags. Same job, same places on the station, different film — and a see-through Studio Grey where the old one was dark blue.

SLEEVES replace our own conventional clipcord sleeves, and this is the one where the format changed as well as the material. There is a pen sleeve now, which the classic line-up never had. And a continuous roll with a cutter, so you take the length each job needs instead of trimming waste off a fixed one.

ECO STANDARD GLOVES did not replace anything of ours. The classic STANDARD is still ours, and if that is the glove your shop runs on, it stays available. Like our classic STANDARD it's thin, soft nitrile, with a breakdown claim added — the easiest of the four to try. We go through that claim in full on the ECO STANDARD glove page.

Are They Compostable or Biodegradable?

Depends on the box you pick up.

The films are certified against a composting specification, at the home grade. The gloves carry a measured breakdown rate: how much of the material broke down, by what day, and under what conditions the test ran. The razor housing is a plant fibre with no test standard named for it.

Every one of those claims describes the material clean, as we made it. None of them describes the item after you have used it. Once something is contaminated its route is set by your local waste rules, whatever it was made of — check what your municipality takes.

Does Switching to Eco Cost More?

Where we can price an eco item at or under what the plastic version cost you, we do. Where we can't, we keep it close. The razors are the clearest case in the eco field — they came in under every other eco razor we put them against.

Some items do cost a little more than the conventional ones did, and what you get back for that is concrete: sized-to-fit formats, a roll you cut yourself instead of trimming waste off a fixed length, and barriers you can actually see through on a station.

Quantity breaks start low — sometimes just a few boxes of the same item, not a wholesale order. Current pricing is on each product page.

Ordering and Shipping

Eikon Essentials ECO ships from our shop in Kingston, Ontario. Order before 1 pm EST Monday to Friday and it ships the same day, and ground is free at $150 before tax. We ship UPS Ground right across Canada, and Ontario and southern Quebec land the next business day.
