Flesh Tone Ink Comes in Steps

A graduated range is chosen by position rather than by name. You take the step nearest the skin in front of you, and the ones either side are known quantities rather than guesses.

That is the whole appeal of a ladder: it is repeatable. A portrait is rarely one sitting, and the tone you matched last month is the same tone this month rather than a mix you have to rebuild.

The two ladders here differ in one respect — how finely the range is cut. Both cover roughly the same ground.

Fusion's Five-Step Range

Fusion's Flesh Tone range runs Extra Light, Light, Medium, Dark and Extra Dark. All five are sold individually.

Five steps cut the range finely enough that a value is more often taken straight off a step. The finer the cut, the more of the range you are keeping current.

Fusion carries named flesh tones alongside the ladder as well — Liquid Flesh, Light Flesh, Dark Flesh, Foundation Flesh and Deano Cook's Deep Flesh. Those sit outside the sequence and are not rungs on it.

Solid's Three-Step Range

Solid's Victor Chil range is Light Skin, Medium Skin and Dark Skin, with a standalone Flesh outside the sequence.

Three steps cover the same ground in wider jumps, so more of the distance to a given value gets closed by mixing — a narrower range to keep current, and more of the matching done by hand.

Neither range is the better ink. Which resolution suits you depends on how wide a client range you work and whether you would rather buy the tone or mix toward it.

A Step You Buy vs a Tone You Mix

Every ladder runs out somewhere between its rungs, and that gap gets closed one of two ways: another bottle, or a mix.

Buying it means the value is repeatable — the same tone next session, not a ratio you have to rebuild. Mixing it means the value exists only as long as you remember how you got there.

Most working palettes end up doing both, which is why a ladder is often bought alongside named portrait tones rather than instead of them.

Where Does the Ladder Run Out?

At the extremes. Five steps and three steps both concentrate their resolution through the middle of the range, and the very lightest and very darkest client skin is where the offer thins first.

That is a property of the ranges as they are built, not a criticism of either. It is the honest reason a ladder is usually a base rather than a complete answer — the rest gets filled from the warm and cool undertones either side of it, or from a named palette.

Seeing all three skin-tone ranges side by side is the fastest way to work out where your own gaps sit.

Steps ship one at a time, each sealed on its own, so a leak costs a single rung and not the ladder. Heat packs are free from November through March. Fusion's five also come boxed together as a pre-selected tone set.
