What Are Round Liner Tattoo Needles?

Round liner needles are individual needles soldered into a tight circular arrangement, creating a precise delivery point for controlled ink deposit and sharp, clean lines. The tight grouping is what separates liner configurations from shaders — the needles are held as close together as possible at the tip, concentrating every pass to exactly where the artist points the machine.

The bladder membrane inside each cartridge acts as the needle's return spring, it pulls the needle bar back after each strike for consistent recoil throughout the session. The sealed design also keeps ink and blood from reaching the machine motor, which meets sealed-system requirements where your local health board mandates them — a feature that matters most for liner needle work, where colour integrity between passes directly affects line crispness.

Round liners deliver a concentrated ink deposit directly to a focused point, unlike round shaders, which have a looser needle spacing designed for broader coverage. The practical difference: liners draw lines, shaders fill areas.

Round liners are available in counts from 1RL (single needle) through 14RL, with smaller counts producing finer, more controlled lines and larger counts creating bolder, wider outlines. Beyond count, the configuration type itself changes the delivery, see the SRL/HRL section below.

Round Liner Needle Uses and Applications

Fine-line work and intricate details: 1RL–3RL in 0.25mm (bugpin) for precise, delicate linework. The smallest delivery point, lowest trauma per pass, and maximum artist control per needle placement.

Traditional bold outlines and American traditional work: 7RL–9RL in 0.35mm for strong, consistent line weight. The higher count drops more ink per pass across a wider line, which means fewer passes and faster coverage on heavy outlines.

Script lettering and calligraphy: 3RL–5RL for control through both thin and thick stroke variations. Enough grouping to deliver ink cleanly on thicker strokes, fine enough for thin transitions.

Portrait work, realism, and fine detail: small round liners (1RL–3RL) for facial features, hair strands, and fine detail where precision per needle placement is the deciding variable. Artists who need bolder lines without stepping up in count can move to SRL, the lower solder point delivers more ink per pass at the same configuration number.

Choosing the Right Needle Diameter: 0.25mm, 0.30mm, or 0.35mm

0.25mm (bugpin) is Eikon's top-selling liner diameter, not a specialty choice but the most-reached-for diameter in the shop across fine-line, realism, and portrait work. The thinner needle profile creates a smaller puncture per pass, which translates to finer lines and less trauma at the same count.

0.30mm offers a balance between precision and ink weight: a crisp line with slightly more ink deposit than bugpin, versatile across different line weights and styles without committing fully to either fine or bold.

0.35mm delivers bold, saturated lines with maximum ink deposit per pass. Preferred for traditional outlines and work where line weight needs to read clearly at distance. More ink per pass means fewer passes on heavy lines.

Diameter and count interact, a 5RL in 0.25mm produces a finer line than a 3RL in 0.35mm. Adjusting diameter while keeping count constant gives a different line weight without changing configuration type. For a bolder result at the same count, step up diameter before stepping up count.

Understanding Taper for Round Liner Needles

Long Taper is the standard for round liner needles, and the taper used across all liner configurations in Eikon's house brand range (RL, SRL, HRL). The longer, sharper point enters skin with less resistance per strike, which means less trauma per pass and the needle running with less chatter through different skin textures.

The feel of Long Taper for liner work: the needle enters smoothly without the skin pushing back. Artists describe it as effortless compared to blunter tapers; the machine drives the needle through rather than the artist having to push into the resistance.

Medium Taper uses a blunter point that deposits more ink per pass, useful when fast ink saturation on bold lines matters more than the smoothest possible entry. Lotus offers Medium Taper Liners as a distinctive option, the only brand in Eikon's liner range to do so. For standard liner work, Long Taper is the right call.

Taper does not affect ink capacity or flow, which is controlled by the tip housing geometry. What taper changes is skin entry angle and resistance per strike. These are independent variables.

Round Liner Configuration Types: RL, SRL, and HRL

Standard Round Liners (RL) use a high solder point that holds needles in the tightest possible circular arrangement at the tip. The concentrated grouping delivers crisp, precise lines with controlled ink deposit, the default liner configuration and the starting point for most lining work.

Straight Round Liners (SRL) use a lower solder point, which lets the needles flare slightly at the tip, that looser arrangement delivers more ink per pass and produces a bolder line at the same count as a standard RL. Artists who find they need multiple passes to saturate a line at a given RL count should try SRL at the same count first.

Hollow Round Liners (HRL) remove the centre needle entirely. The resulting well delivers maximum ink with less total skin trauma than a same-count RL or SRL, the same bold result with fewer passes and reduced trauma. Counts are even (06, 08, 10, 12) because odd-count liners need the centre needle for geometric stability.

The RL→SRL→HRL progression is unique to Eikon's house brand in the shop, Kwadron and Cheyenne do not carry SRL or HRL. It is one of the most substantive differentiators in Eikon's liner range.

TEX Cartridges — 316H steel, precision-honed tips, biodegradable packs. Among the most affordable in the shop($28.99–36.99 CAD/box of 20). Canadian brand by Deadly North.

Lotus Needles — exclusive Canadian distribution. Medium Taper Liners and Ultra Small 0.20mm (#06 gauge) Liners. Bar needle liner options with Griffin Tubes for traditional setups. $35.95–50.00 CAD/box of 20.

Clear tips across all brands let artists monitor needle extension in real time and verify complete cleaning between colours. The sealed bladder membrane in each cartridge ensures consistent recoil and keeps ink and blood from reaching the machine motor.

Round liner tattoo needle cartridges pair with tattoo supplies including pigments, inks, and accessories. Eternal Ink is a trusted pigment brand available at Eikon for colour saturation and pigment consistency across sessions.

How to Select the Best Round Liner Needle for Your Project

Match needle count to line weight: 1RL–3RL for fine details and single-line work; 5RL–7RL for medium outlines across most styles; 9RL–14RL for bold traditional lines where coverage speed matters.

Select diameter based on line fineness needed: 0.25mm for fine-line and realism, 0.30mm for versatile general lining, 0.35mm for bold saturated outlines. Adjust diameter before adjusting count when you want a different line weight within the same configuration.

Choose RL for standard liner work, SRL for a bolder line at the same count, HRL for maximum ink delivery with less trauma. The configuration type gives you line-weight control beyond the count number.

Stock multiple configurations and diameters to handle the range of client requests in a session, from delicate script to heavy tribal outlines, without having to match one cartridge to every job. Can you use a round shader needle as a liner? No, shaders have looser needle spacing designed for coverage, not the tight grouping needed for controlled linework.
